Signs You May Need Dentures
Is It Time for Dentures? — Common Signs
Many patients wait too long before seeking tooth replacement — often making the process more complex and costly. If you recognize any of these signs, schedule a consultation with Dr. C today.
😬
Multiple Missing Teeth
If you are missing several teeth in one arch — especially back molars — chewing efficiency drops dramatically and remaining teeth begin to shift.
🦷
Severely Damaged Teeth
Cracked, broken, or heavily decayed teeth that cannot be saved with crowns or root canals may need extraction, followed by full or partial dentures.
🔴
Chronic Toothache
Persistent pain from severely infected or damaged teeth that have failed treatment may indicate the need for extraction and tooth replacement planning.
😶
Difficulty Chewing or Speaking
Struggling to bite, chew certain foods, or pronounce words clearly — especially sounds that require front teeth contact — are classic signs of significant tooth loss.
😞
Sunken Facial Appearance
Missing teeth cause the jawbone to resorb, making the face appear sunken, older, or hollow around the cheeks and lips. Dentures restore facial volume and structure.
🦴
Advanced Gum Disease
Severe periodontal disease can destroy the bone and tissue supporting teeth, leading to tooth loss that requires a comprehensive tooth replacement plan.
🦴 The Bone Loss Problem Nobody Warns You About: Every tooth you lose triggers gradual bone resorption in that area of your jaw. The longer teeth are missing, the more bone you lose — making future implant placement more difficult and changing your facial structure. Early action preserves bone and options. Dr. C will honestly assess your bone level and explain all your options during your consultation.
Why Timing Matters
What Happens to Your Jawbone After Tooth Loss
This is the most important thing most dentists never explain. Understanding bone loss is why replacing missing teeth — sooner rather than later — is critical to your long-term health and options.
✅
At Extraction
Tooth removed. Bone and gum fully present. Best time to plan tooth replacement and preserve options.
⚠️
6–12 Months Later
25% of bone width lost in first year. Neighboring teeth begin to drift. Face starts to change subtly.
🔴
3 Years Later
Significant bone loss. Denture fit becomes challenging. Implant placement now requires bone grafting in many cases.
❌
10+ Years Later
Severe bone resorption. Facial collapse. Implants may no longer be possible without major surgery.
How Dentures Help — And Their Limitation
Traditional complete and partial dentures rest on the gum ridges and do not replace the tooth root — which means they do not prevent bone loss. The jawbone continues to resorb over time, causing dentures to gradually become loose and require relining or replacement every few years.
This is why Dr. C always discusses your complete range of options — including implant-supported solutions that do preserve bone — so you can make a fully informed decision about which replacement is right for your health, lifestyle, and budget.
✓Traditional dentures: restore chewing, speech, and appearance effectively
✓Traditional dentures: most affordable tooth replacement option
!Traditional dentures: do not stop jawbone resorption
!Traditional dentures: require periodic relining as bone changes
✓Implant-supported dentures: prevent bone loss + superior stability
Dr. C's Honest Philosophy
"I believe every patient deserves to know the full picture — not just what dentures can do, but what they can't do, and what the alternatives offer. My job is to give you honest information, not to push the most expensive option."
Every patient's situation is different. Frisco Dental Hub offers the full range of denture solutions — from conventional removable dentures to implant-stabilized permanent options — all customized to your mouth, your lifestyle, and your budget.
😊
Most Common for Full Tooth Loss
Complete (Full) Dentures
Complete dentures replace all the teeth in the upper arch, lower arch, or both. They rest on the gum ridges and are held in place by natural suction and a proper fit. Today's full dentures are far more realistic, comfortable, and lightweight than the dentures of previous generations.
Two Types of Complete Dentures
🕐 Conventional Dentures
Made after all remaining teeth are removed and gums have fully healed — typically 8–12 weeks. Because healing is complete, conventional dentures fit more precisely and last longer than immediate dentures. This is the gold standard for fit and comfort.
⚡ Immediate Dentures
Made before extractions and placed the same day teeth are removed. The major benefit is you are never without teeth. The limitation: as gums and bone heal and change shape, immediate dentures become loose and require professional relining — and are typically replaced with conventional dentures after healing.
✓Custom acrylic base color-matched to your natural gums
✓Prosthetic teeth custom-selected for size, shape, and shade
✓Digital impressions — no uncomfortable putty needed
✓Restore chewing ability, speech clarity, and facial fullness
✓Typically covered 50% by most PPO insurance plans

💡 Digital Advantage: Most denture offices still take traditional messy putty impressions. At Frisco Dental Hub, we use digital impressions and 3D CBCT imaging — creating more precise fit models, eliminating gag reflex from putty, and sending cleaner data to our dental lab for better-fitting dentures.
Partial dentures replace some missing teeth when healthy natural teeth remain in the arch. They consist of prosthetic teeth attached to a gum-colored base, connected to a metal or flexible framework that clasps onto remaining natural teeth. Partial dentures are often more affordable than dental bridges and can replace multiple non-adjacent teeth in one appliance.
Three Types of Partial Dentures
🔩 Cast Metal Partial (Most Durable)
A thin metal framework supports the prosthetic teeth and clasps onto natural teeth. The gold standard for durability — can last 10+ years. Slightly more visible clasps but exceptional strength and stability. Covered by most PPO dental insurance plans.
🌱 Flexible (Valplast) Partial
Made of flexible, lightweight nylon — no metal framework or clasps. Gum-colored attachments blend naturally with tissues, making this the most aesthetic option. Ideal for patients with metal allergies or cosmetic concerns. Best for smaller tooth gaps.
💲 Acrylic Partial (Flipper)
An acrylic base (similar to full denture material) with wire clasps. Less durable than cast metal but very affordable — often used as a temporary solution while waiting for implants or bridges to be completed.
Why Replace Missing Teeth with a Partial?
✓Prevent tooth shifting — remaining teeth drift into gaps within months, causing bite problems and crooked teeth
✓Restore chewing function — evenly distribute bite forces across all teeth again
✓Prevent bone loss progression in the gap area (though not as effectively as implants)
✓Protect remaining teeth — prevent overloading of adjacent teeth that compensate for the gap
✓Restore speech — front tooth gaps especially affect "th," "f," and "s" sounds
✓Most affordable multi-tooth replacement option available
💡 Partial vs Bridge: If you are missing 1–2 adjacent teeth and have strong neighboring teeth, a dental bridge may be a better option — fixed in place, no removal needed. If missing multiple non-adjacent teeth, a partial is usually more appropriate. Dr. C will compare both options honestly during your consultation.
Implant-Supported Dentures — The Best of Both Worlds
Want the affordability of dentures combined with the stability of implants? Implant-supported overdentures and All-on-4 treatments provide dramatically superior results compared to traditional removable dentures.
🔩
Snap-In / Overdenture (2–4 Implants)
2 to 4 dental implants placed in the jawbone. The denture snaps onto ball attachments or locator abutments on top of the implants. Removable for daily cleaning, but stays firmly in place while eating and speaking. Dramatically more stable than traditional dentures — eliminates the need for adhesive. Preserves jawbone.
2–4 implantsRemovable for cleaningPreserves bone
🌟
All-on-4 (Full Arch Fixed)
4 strategically placed implants support a complete arch of fixed prosthetic teeth — you never remove them. Eat, speak, and smile exactly like natural teeth. No slipping, no adhesive, no nightly removal. A transformative, life-changing solution for complete tooth loss. The implants are angled to maximize available bone, often eliminating the need for bone grafts.

🔑 Which Is Right for You? Dr. C uses 3D CBCT imaging to evaluate your available bone before recommending implant-supported options. Some patients can proceed directly to implants; others may need bone grafting first. The right choice depends on your bone density, health, timeline, and budget — all explained honestly at your consultation.
New dentures feel different at first — and that is completely normal. Here's a realistic, week-by-week guide to what you can expect during your adjustment period so you are never surprised or worried unnecessarily.

Ongoing
Ongoing — Maintenance
Annual check-ups to assess fit and gum health. Professional relining every 3–5 years as bone changes shape. Replacement typically needed after 7–10 years. Keep follow-up appointments — denture fit is health.
📅 Annual check-ups key
Daily Denture Care — The Right Way
✓Remove and rinse after every meal to clear food particles
✓Brush daily with a soft denture brush and non-abrasive denture paste — never regular toothpaste (too abrasive)
✓Soak overnight in denture solution or plain water — never hot water (warps acrylic)
✓Handle over a towel or basin — dentures break easily when dropped on hard surfaces
✓Brush your gums, tongue, and palate daily with a soft brush — oral tissue health matters even without teeth
✓Schedule annual check-ups at Frisco Dental Hub to monitor fit, gum health, and oral cancer screening
✓Never attempt DIY repairs — cracked or ill-fitting dentures must be professionally repaired to avoid injury
Signs Your Dentures Need Professional Attention
!
Looseness or Slipping
If dentures are slipping while eating or speaking, it's time for a reline or evaluation — not more adhesive.
!
Sore Spots That Don't Resolve
Persistent red or sore areas on gums need adjustment. Call Frisco Dental Hub — adjustments are quick and painless.
!
Visible Cracks or Chips
Cracked dentures can irritate gum tissues and break further. Professional repair needed — do not use household glue.
!
More than 10 Years Old
Dentures over 10 years old rarely fit well due to bone changes. New dentures improve both comfort and health significantly.

Complete dentures replace ALL teeth in the upper or lower arch (or both) for patients with no remaining natural teeth. They rest on gum ridges and rely on suction and proper fit. Partial dentures replace SOME missing teeth when healthy natural teeth still remain — using clasps or precision attachments to anchor to remaining teeth. Dr. C evaluates your specific situation and recommends the most appropriate option during your consultation at (972) 276-4888.
Denture costs in Frisco TX vary by type: Partial dentures $900–$2,500 per arch; Complete conventional dentures $1,200–$3,000 per arch; Immediate dentures $1,500–$3,500; Implant-supported overdentures $3,500–$8,000 per arch. Most PPO dental insurance plans cover dentures at 50% after deductible. We accept Delta Dental, MetLife, Cigna, Aetna, BCBS, United Healthcare, Humana, and Guardian. CareCredit 0% APR financing available. Call (972) 276-4888 for your personalized estimate.
Conventional dentures at Frisco Dental Hub take approximately 4–8 weeks from first appointment to final delivery (longer if extractions and healing are required first). The process includes consultation, extractions if needed, a healing period, digital impressions, bite records, wax try-in appointment, and final delivery with adjustments. Immediate dentures are placed the same day as extractions but require relining after healing. Implant-supported dentures require 3–6 months for implant healing before the final denture is attached.
Well-maintained traditional dentures typically last 5–10 years. Because your jawbone naturally changes shape over time after tooth loss, dentures need professional evaluation every 1–2 years and relining every 3–5 years to maintain proper fit. Signs it's time for new dentures: looseness, difficulty chewing, persistent sore spots, visible cracks, or more than 10 years of wear. Implant-supported dentures typically last 15–25+ years with proper care. Annual check-ups at Frisco Dental Hub monitor denture fit and overall oral health.
Implant-supported dentures offer significant advantages: far superior stability (no slipping), preservation of jawbone (preventing bone loss), no adhesive needed, better chewing function (70–90% of natural vs 20–30% for traditional), and a longer lifespan (15–25+ years vs 5–10). They cost more upfront but provide dramatically better quality of life and typically better long-term value. Traditional dentures remain an excellent, affordable option for patients who are not implant candidates or prefer a non-surgical approach. Dr. C will honestly assess which option is best for your bone density, health, and budget during your consultation.
Most patients adjust to new dentures within 3–6 weeks. Week 1: increased saliva, minor soreness, speech changes — all normal. Weeks 2–3: significant improvement, soreness resolves with adjustments, soft foods introduced. Weeks 4–6: most patients fully comfortable, normal speech, wider diet. Some patients may take longer depending on bone ridge shape and prior dental history. Dr. C schedules follow-up adjustment appointments in the first weeks — these are included in your denture care and are an expected part of the process.
An immediate denture is made before teeth are extracted and placed the same day. The major benefit is that you are never without teeth during healing. The limitation is that gums and bone change shape as they heal, making the immediate denture looser over time — requiring professional relining (or replacement with conventional dentures) after 6–12 months. Immediate dentures are ideal for patients who need extractions and cannot bear the social or professional burden of going toothless during healing. Dr. C will advise whether immediate dentures are the right choice for your specific treatment plan.
Dentures feel loose after 5 years primarily because of jawbone resorption — natural bone shrinkage that continues year after year following tooth loss. The denture itself has not changed; the bone and gum ridges that support it have. Other causes: warping from heat (hot water or being left dry), worn-down chewing surfaces, weakened suction from medication-related saliva changes, and weight loss that alters facial tissue. Solutions: a professional reline restores fit ($300–$600), a rebase replaces the pink acrylic base, or a new denture is made if existing one is beyond reline. Adding 2 mini-implants beneath an existing denture can also lock it in place permanently. Dr. C offers a fit evaluation — call (972) 276-4888.
Follow these six rules to clean dentures safely: (1) Use a soft-bristled denture brush — never a hard toothbrush, which scratches acrylic and creates plaque-trapping grooves. (2) Use non-abrasive denture cleaner or mild dish soap — never regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive. (3) Rinse and brush after every meal. (4) Soak overnight in cleansing solution or plain cool water — never hot water, which warps acrylic permanently. (5) Clean over a folded towel or basin of water so an accidental drop will not crack them. (6) Brush gums, tongue, and remaining teeth twice daily with a soft brush to prevent denture stomatitis (a yeast infection beneath the denture). Avoid bleach on metal-clasped partials — it corrodes the metal. Schedule a professional ultrasonic cleaning at Frisco Dental Hub once or twice yearly to remove tartar that home brushing cannot.
New dentures cause minor soreness in the first 1–2 weeks as gum tissue and mouth muscles adjust to a foreign object. This soreness is normal, expected, and resolves with quick chairside adjustments — Dr. C grinds tiny "high spots" off the denture base where it presses too hard. Call (972) 276-4888 promptly if: pain is sharp rather than dull · sore spots bleed or develop white ulcers larger than a pencil eraser · pain spreads to the jaw joint or ears · you cannot eat or sleep because of pain · or any soreness persists beyond 4 weeks of wear with adjustments. Severe pain is never normal and almost always indicates a fit problem fixable in one short appointment.
(1) Confirm fit is correct — a well-made denture should hold by suction alone with no adhesive needed; if it slips from day one, it needs a reline or remake. (2) Use a thin layer of denture adhesive (Fixodent, Poligrip, Sea-Bond strips) — apply 3–4 small dots, never a full coating. (3) Cut food into small pieces and chew on both sides simultaneously to balance pressure. (4) Avoid sticky foods (caramel, gum, taffy) and very hard foods (whole apples, hard bread crusts) until you've adjusted. (5) Bite with side teeth (premolars and molars), not the front teeth — front-teeth biting tips the denture out of place. (6) For permanent stability, ask Dr. C about adding 2–4 mini-implants beneath your existing denture — this snap-in conversion ($2,500–$5,000) eliminates slipping completely.
No — remove dentures every night for at least 6–8 hours and soak them in cleansing solution. Sleeping in dentures dramatically increases your risk of: denture stomatitis (a yeast infection of the gum tissue beneath the denture, appearing as red inflamed patches), pneumonia (bacteria from the denture surface can be aspirated into the lungs during sleep — particularly dangerous in patients over 65), accelerated bone loss in the jaw ridges from constant pressure, and persistent bad breath. Removing dentures gives gum tissue oxygen exposure and lets it recover. Exception: in the first 24–48 hours after extractions with an immediate denture, dentists usually instruct patients to keep them in continuously to act as a bandage and control swelling.
Especially in the first 6–8 weeks of new dentures (and as long-term cautions): (1) Sticky foods — caramel, taffy, gum, gummy candy, peanut butter — pull dentures off the gums. (2) Very hard foods — whole apples, hard bread crusts, raw carrots, hard candy, ice — can crack the denture. (3) Tough meats — steak, jerky — cut into small pieces and chew on both sides. (4) Foods with small hard bits — popcorn kernels, sesame, poppy and raspberry seeds — get trapped between the denture and gum, causing sores. (5) Very hot foods/drinks — heat is muffled by the denture base, raising burn risk. (6) Sugary or acidic drinks held in the mouth promote fungal infection beneath the denture. Best foods for new wearers: yogurt, smoothies, soft eggs, fish, cooked vegetables, soft pasta, and ripe fruit. Most patients return to a normal diet within 6 weeks. Implant-supported dentures eliminate most food restrictions.
Yes — and for most patients, properly fitted dentures dramatically improve facial appearance. Tooth loss causes the lower third of the face to collapse: lips fold inward, the chin moves closer to the nose, and deep wrinkles form around the mouth (sometimes called "denture face" when someone has gone too long without replacement). A well-designed denture restores the natural vertical dimension of your face, supports the lips and cheeks from inside, and recreates the youthful facial profile you had with natural teeth. A poorly designed denture can do the opposite — making the face look too long, too short, or unnatural. Dr. C uses precise jaw-relationship records and aesthetic try-in appointments to ensure the final denture supports your face the way your natural teeth did. Important caveat: traditional dentures cannot stop ongoing jawbone resorption beneath them, so the face will gradually change over years even with a perfect-fitting denture. Implant-supported dentures preserve bone and prevent this long-term collapse.
Snap-in dentures (overdentures) typically use 2 to 4 implants per arch, depending on the arch and how stable you want the result. Standard configurations: (1) 2 implants on the lower arch — the most common and affordable upgrade from a traditional lower denture, dramatically improves stability for $4,000–$7,000. The lower jaw has limited surface area and traditional lower dentures are notoriously loose, so even 2 implants make a transformative difference. (2) 4 implants on the lower arch — more stability, can support a bar attachment, $7,000–$12,000. (3) 4 implants on the upper arch — typically required because the upper jaw is softer bone and the palate suction needs replacing, $7,000–$13,000. (4) 6 implants per arch (or All-on-4 with 4 implants supporting a fixed bridge) — for fully fixed permanent teeth that never come out, $20,000–$35,000 per arch. Dr. C uses 3D CBCT imaging to evaluate bone density and recommend the right number — never more than you need.
Many denture repairs can be completed same day at Frisco Dental Hub — depending on the damage. Same-day repairs ($150–$400, often while you wait): (1) Cracked acrylic base — bonded with dental-grade acrylic in 1–2 hours. (2) Detached tooth that has not been lost — re-bonded in under an hour. (3) Loose clasp on a partial denture — adjusted or re-cemented same-day. 24–48 hour turnaround: broken denture in two pieces with missing fragments (lab fabrication needed), multiple lost teeth (shade matching required), or a full reline (typically one-day turnaround). 1–2+ weeks: cast-metal framework breaks on partial dentures, or complete remakes. ⚠️ Do NOT attempt home repair with super glue — it weakens the bond, can damage your gums, and makes professional repair much more expensive. For an emergency denture problem, bring the denture and any pieces to (972) 276-4888 for an assessment.

From Extraction to New Smile — How Denture Care Connects
Denture treatment rarely happens in isolation. Depending on your starting point, your plan may involve extractions, bone preservation, sedation, or follow-up implant care. Here's how each step links together at Frisco Dental Hub.
Step 1 — Diagnostic imaging. Every denture case at Frisco Dental Hub starts with a panoramic X-ray and, when implants may be involved, a 3D CBCT cone-beam scan to evaluate bone height, density, and nerve position. This informs every subsequent decision — including whether bone preservation after tooth loss is needed before final dentures.
Step 2 — Tooth extraction (if needed). Patients still wearing failing teeth typically need tooth extraction before dentures can be made. We perform atraumatic extractions designed to preserve the bony socket — critical because the shape of the ridge directly determines how well a future denture will fit. For anxious patients, sedation dentistry options including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation are available.
Step 3 — Bone grafting (when bone is thin). If a CBCT scan reveals insufficient bone for stable conventional dentures or future implants, a socket-preservation graft placed at the time of extraction can preserve ridge volume. For patients who have been edentulous for years, a more substantial ridge-augmentation graft may be needed before implant-supported dentures become possible.
Step 4 — Denture fabrication. Once the foundation is healthy, we design either complete or partial dentures using digital impressions. For patients who want a fixed (non-removable) result, we transition to All-on-4 dental implants with a fixed prosthetic arch. For patients keeping some natural teeth, a dental crown or bridge sometimes anchors a precision-attachment partial denture for superior aesthetics.
Step 5 — Long-term follow-up. Annual denture check-ups and cleanings evaluate fit, gum health, and any soft-tissue changes — including oral cancer screening. Periodic relines (every 3–5 years) maintain proper fit. If a denture cracks unexpectedly, our emergency dentistry service offers same-day repair for most fractures.
Step 6 — Making it affordable. Cost should never be the reason a patient stays without teeth. We accept all major PPO plans (typically covering 50% of denture cost) and offer CareCredit 0% APR financing with monthly plans of 6, 12, or 24 months — letting patients spread implant-supported and All-on-4 cases over manageable payments. HSA and FSA funds are also accepted.
The bigger picture. This continuum — extraction, bone preservation, restoration, and follow-up — is the heart of restorative dentistry in Frisco TX. We coordinate every step in-house so you never need a referral, and so the team that designs your denture is the team that will care for it for the next 10 years.
