Sealants

Long-Term Protection

Our aim is for our patients to need as little dental treatment as possible. Children who grow into adulthood with the fewest restored teeth will have the lowest risk of future dental issues.
Sealants can significantly decrease the number of cavities a child may develop during their childhood. The chewing surfaces of molars have deep grooves that can resemble canyons under a microscope. Many of these crevices are narrower than a single toothbrush bristle yet wide enough for bacteria to settle in. It’s easy to understand how cavities can form in such ideal hiding spots.

If the grooves in permanent molars are sealed early, the risk of decay on the chewing surfaces decreases significantly. Fortunately, Dr. Chakrapani can perform this procedure quickly and without any discomfort or anesthesia. The sealant material fills in the grooves, creating a smooth surface that makes it easier for young ones to maintain good oral hygiene. A resin is applied over the grooves and set quickly with a blue activating light. In just a few minutes, your child’s teeth are safeguarded against cavities.

While sealants typically last a few years and may need occasional repairs or replacements, research shows they can reduce tooth decay on sealed molars by up to 90%. This simple, cost-effective step can help your child enter adulthood with fewer fillings and a lower risk of needing extensive dental work in the future.
