Cavities and small fractures can lead to bigger problems if left untreated. In the past, metal amalgam fillings (or silver fillings) were used to repair teeth but often left them discolored and weakened due to the wedging effect of the metal. Today, tooth-colored composite resins provide a better solution by blending seamlessly with the tooth and chemically bonding to it, offering a strong and durable restoration.
Composites serve both functional and aesthetic purposes simultaneously. For instance, if a cavity forms near the front of a tooth along the gum line, it may be noticeable when you smile. By gently removing the decayed area and replacing it with a tooth-colored filling, the tooth is not only restored but looks natural and even better than before.
Composites are made from a liquid resin mixed with finely ground glass particles. Once applied to the prepared tooth, a blue light is used to harden the material in seconds. Dr. Chakrapani will then shape and polish the tooth to complete the process.
